Glazed Tofu: A Delicious and Nutritious Delight!


If you've ever ventured into the realm of plant-based cuisine, chances are you've come across tofu. Among the myriad ways to prepare tofu, one of the most delectable and crowd-pleasing methods is to glaze it. Today I wanted to share this yummy recipe, we hope you enjoy it.



What is Glazed Tofu?


Glazed tofu involves coating tofu pieces with a flavorful sauce that typically combines sweet, savory, and tangy elements. This method transforms the mild-flavored tofu into a delectable dish with a rich, glossy exterior and a satisfying texture. The glaze can vary widely, incorporating ingredients like soy sauce, maple syrup, honey (or agave for a vegan version), garlic, ginger, and various spices.

How to Make Glazed Tofu


Here’s a basic recipe to get you started on your glazed tofu journey:



Ingredients:



2 blocks of firm or extra-firm tofu


2 Tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)


1 Teaspoon smoked paprika


Glaze recipe


4 Cloves of garlic minced


1/4 Cup brown sugar, honey, maple syrup or agave (a sweetener)


1 Tablespoon mustard


2 Tablespoons water


Salt to taste.



Instructions:


Preheat oven to 375 degrees.


Prepare the Tofu: Drain the tofu and press it to remove excess moisture. This can be done by placing the tofu between paper towels and setting a heavy object on top for about 20 minutes. check out my blog post on How to press tofu. Once pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.


Slice Tofu: Once you tofu is pressed score it diagonal both directions, allowing glaze to soak into the tofu.

Season Tofu: Place Tofu in deep dish- I used a 9x13 dish. pour soy sauce evenly over tofu, sprinkle smoked paprika over tofu them rub in with hands. ( I turned the tofu over and rubbed the top of the tofu on the bottom of the dish to help evenly coat the tofu.)


Bake tofu for 50 min.


Make the Glaze: In sauce pan whisk together garlic, sweetener of your choice, mustard, water and salt to taste. bring to slight boil.


Once the tofu has baked for 50 min. remove from oven and pour glace evenly over it. Return the tofu to the oven for 10 min.


Serve: Transfer the glazed tofu to a serving dish Serve over potatoes, rice, noodles, or alongside steamed vegetables.



Tips for Perfect Glazed Tofu


Pressing the Tofu: Removing excess moisture is key to achieving a crispy texture. Take the time to press the tofu well.


High Heat: Cook the tofu on medium-high heat to ensure it gets nicely browned and crispy before adding the glaze.


Experiment with Flavors: Feel free to experiment with different ingredients for the glaze. Add a bit of sriracha for heat, or swap out maple syrup for honey or brown sugar for a different sweetness profile.
