I cook them right in my kitchen on my George Foreman. (no need to grill outside in the cold!)

When it comes to crafting a delicious, plant-based meal, homemade black bean burgers are hard to beat. Packed with flavor, nutrients, and a satisfying texture, these southwestern-inspired burgers are perfect for a weeknight dinner, weekend barbecue, or meal prep. Plus, they're simple to customize and full of wholesome ingredients. Let’s dive into how to make your own Southwestern Black Bean Burgers from scratch.

Why Make Your Own Black Bean Burgers?

Store-bought veggie burgers are convenient, but homemade options are fresher, healthier, and more affordable. By making your own, you control the ingredients, reduce unnecessary additives, and create a burger that’s uniquely yours. This recipe is loaded with protein, fiber, and bold southwestern flavors—perfect for eating plant-based , vegetarians, or anyone looking to enjoy a meatless meal.

Ingredients

To make four to six hearty burgers, you’ll need: ( I found that I like to make my patties thin so they have a little more crunch, then you can do a double patty burger)

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 (16 oz) can black beans (or 1 can, rinsed and drained)

  • 1/2- 1 can corn

  • 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped evenly

  • 1/2 onion, chopped evenly

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 flax egg ( 1 tablespoon ground flax + 3 tablespoons water) let sit for 5 min.

  • ½ cup of breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)

  • 1 Tablespoons Chili powder

  • 1 Tablespoon Cumin

  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (Optional)

Optional Toppings:

  • Sliced avocado or guacamole

  • Tomato slices

  • Lettuce leaves

  • Pickles

  • plant-based mayo or spicy salsa

  • Whole-grain or gluten-free burger buns

Instructions

1. Prepare the Ingredients: Begin by mashing the black beans in a large bowl with a fork or potato masher. Aim for a mix of mashed and slightly chunky beans for a great texture.

2. Add the Veggies and Flavors: Stir in the red onion, corn, red bell pepper, cilantro, lime juice, and all the spices. Mix thoroughly to combine.

3. Bind the Mixture: Add the flax egg and breadcrumbs to the bowl. Stir until the mixture holds together. If it feels too wet, add a bit more breadcrumbs; if it’s too dry, add a splash of water or lime juice.

** For a quick mix, chop up veggies in your Cuisinart food processor, add beans seasonings, flax egg, corn and breadcrumbs and pulse to desired texture. SO FAST!!!

4. Shape the Patties: Form the mixture into 4 to 6 patties, depending on your desired size. Place the patties on a plate or baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This helps them firm up for cooking.

5. Cook the Burgers: Heat a large skillet, grill pan over medium heat and lightly grease or your George Foreman. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and slightly crisp. Alternatively, you can bake them at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

 MMMM Good! :)
MMMM Good! :)

6. Assemble and Serve: Toast your burger buns and add your favorite toppings. Place the cooked patty on the bun, stack on the extras, and enjoy!

Tips for Success

  • Customize the flavor: Adjust the spices to your taste or add extras like chipotle peppers in adobo sauce for a smoky kick.

  • Meal prep: Make a double batch and freeze uncooked patties for a quick meal later. Separate them with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

  • Make it grain-free: Swap breadcrumbs for almond flour or oat flour.

  • Calorie Watch: Swap out your bun for a lettuce wrap. mmm Good!
