Cruising is a fantastic way to explore new destinations, unwind, and indulge in world-class entertainment. But for those following a plant-based diet, navigating the food options on a cruise ship can be a bit of a challenge. Fortunately, with a little planning and preparation, you can enjoy the journey without straying from your plant-based lifestyle. Here’s how to stick to your plant-based diet while cruising, ensuring your vacation is as healthy as it is enjoyable. My husband and I recently went on a Royal Caribbean Cruise. We love our plant-based lifestyle and were curios to see how accommodating the cruise was. below are some tips that we found helpful.

1. Research the Cruise Line’s Food Options

Before booking your cruise, take some time to research the cruise line’s commitment to catering to plant-based diets. Many cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises, offer a variety of plant-based options, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free meals. Some ships even feature entire plant-based menus in their main dining areas. Like I mentioned above, we went on Royal Caribbean and when i called to ask about their plant-based options they let me know that they now have a plant based option per day on their main dinning menu, Along with being able to request it in the buffet setting.

Look for cruise lines that specifically highlight plant-based or sustainable eating. They’re often more accommodating when it comes to providing delicious options that meet your dietary needs. Read online reviews and forums for insight into other plant-based cruisers' experiences, so you know what to expect.

2. Communicate with the Cruise Line in Advance

Once you’ve chosen your cruise, don’t be afraid to contact the cruise line and discuss your dietary preferences. Inform them of your plant-based requirements well in advance of your sailing. Many cruise lines will allow you to pre-order specific meals or request special accommodations.

If you have more specific needs, such as gluten-free or soy-free, be sure to mention these, too. The earlier you make these requests, the more likely they will be able to accommodate you with fresh, delicious meals.

3. Explore the Ship's Dining Options

Cruise ships often have a variety of dining options—ranging from the main dining room to casual buffets, specialty restaurants, and room service. While these might seem like they only cater to traditional meat-based meals, they often have hidden plant-based gems.

The buffet is a great place to find fruits, vegetables, salads, legumes, and grains. You can often build your own plant-based meal from these offerings, especially if there’s a dedicated vegetarian or health-conscious station. We loved the oatmeal bar for breakfast along with the fresh fruit. They offered veggie burgers as well upon request. The desserts we did have to request during lunch (they would give you the dessert that was available in the main dining the night before!) The servers in the main dinning are so good and remember your dietary request. (our server figured out the first night when we ordered the vegan options and requested the vegan ice cream and every night after that he would bring out the ice cream without us having to request it.) They are amazing!

For a more formal experience, check out the specialty restaurants, some of which may offer vegan or vegetarian menus. It never hurts to ask your server about plant-based options. They can often customize a dish to meet your needs.

4. Embrace Local Plant-Based Cuisine

Cruising is a great way to explore different cultures and flavors, and shore excursions provide a unique opportunity to sample local plant-based dishes. Before you go ashore, do some research on plant-based dining options at your ports of call. Many cities and coastal areas have thriving vegan and vegetarian food scenes.

You could find yourself enjoying an authentic plant-based meal while exploring a new city or relaxing on the beach. Not only will you get to taste something new, but you’ll also have a chance to connect with local plant-based communities.

5. Stay Hydrated and Practice Moderation

Cruise ships offer an abundance of food options, but it's essential to remember that moderation is key to sticking with your plant-based diet. While it’s tempting to indulge in all the decadent desserts and buffets available, try to stick to a balanced diet that supports your plant-based lifestyle. Its easy to see how people can over eat and feel miserable on their cruise. We were able to enjoy every min with no complaint of tummy aches or heartburn, or the heavy greasy feeling. SO much more enjoyable.

Also, don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout your cruise. The ocean air, sun, and activities can dehydrate you faster than you think. Staying hydrated will help you feel your best while enjoying all the activities the cruise has to offer.

6. Enjoy the Experience and Keep an Open Mind

So nice to relax!

While sticking to your plant-based diet is important, cruising is about relaxation and enjoyment. Don’t stress if a meal doesn’t turn out exactly as expected or if you have to compromise in some situations. Stay flexible and enjoy the culinary adventure, knowing that you can still make mindful choices that align with your values.

Final Thoughts

Sticking to a plant-based diet while on a cruise is absolutely achievable with some planning and communication. My biggest take away is that it never hurts to ask, they seem to always have something, and I know that I will feel better and enjoy the trip more by eating the way that my body is used to, along with moderation! By researching your cruise line’s options, talking to staff in advance, ask someone if you cant find an option, you can enjoy a worry-free and satisfying vacation. Most importantly, remember that the goal is to enjoy the experience and make lasting memories—healthy eating is just a part of that journey!
