My husband and I lived in Vancouver, Canada for several years. You might be wondering what that has to do with us being Indian food fanatics -- well let me tell you! I lived in Surrey, a suburb 40 minutes outside of the city, for most of my time in Canada. The area is sometimes referred to as "little India" because of the dense population of Indian immigrants. The food is authentic and absolutely amazing, and I quickly fell in love with the Asian cuisine. Since moving to Utah, we've enjoyed seeking out the best Indian food we can find. In this post I'll share some thoughts on a few restaurants we've tried -- both good and bad.
I feel compelled to insert that if you've never really tried Indian food -- please do! You will thank me a hundred times over.
Saffron Circle - Riverton, Utah
This new location took us by surprise. We loved the flavors of both the chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken. Both of us agreed that this was the best Butter Chicken we've had since moving back to the States. The price was marginally more expensive than other Indian restaurants at $20-$30 per person. Next time we go, we would definitely split just a single entree of Butter Chicken!
Gura's Spice House - Herriman, Utah
This spot unfortunately fell flat for the both of us. We ordered Butter Chicken as well as chicken Tikka Masala. The Butter Chicken was just okay, but for some reason the Tikka Masala was almost inedible. I know that sounds hoity toity, but it's true. We took a to go box with the extra Tikka Masala and it sat in the fridge for several days before we finally threw it out. One redeeming trait for this restaurant is that they provided complimentary mango ice cream with the meal which was a pleasant surprise. The service was also excellent, everyone there was quite kind.
Kohinoor - Orem, Utah
We both liked this location! If you are located in this area it is definitely worth it to pop in and order something off the menu. It doesn't seem to get too busy either, which is a plus for a quieter night out. Overall, everything was delicious and well-priced.
India Palace - Provo, Utah
This restaurant is in such a fun location on Center Street. I highly recommend saving some time just walking around after your meal to take in the lively, bright atmosphere. We went here with some friends, and what stood apart in our memories was the great service and amazing food. Truly this spot was impressive in terms of their flavors. The chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken were phenomenal, as was the naan. I do feel, however, that portions at this location were smaller than is typical, so just be aware of that. Usually, my husband and I can comfortably split an entree (made easier with extra rice), but I don't think we would've been able to pull that off here.
Thrive Life Butter Chicken
Alright, alright this one is kind of cheating. This is not a restaurant, but definitely worth a mention in this post. Thrive Life freeze dried food provides meals that you pour boiling water into and let sit for 10 minutes and then it is ready to eat. My favorite meal that they have is butter chicken. The price is on par with going out to eat, the only obvious advantage is that you can eat this Indian food from your home within 10 minutes. Thrive Life also has other meals that are also worth checking out!
Tandoor Indian Grill - Provo, Utah
This is by far and away hands down our favorite Indian restaurant to frequent. At our peak, we went there probably every other week. Always we would split an entree of Chicken Tikka Masala and Plain naan. Their friend pakora is also really crunchy and flavorful. With free extra rice, there was always plenty of food. This little hole-in-the-wall spot is easy to miss, especially considering it is attached to a hotel. Some added bonuses include free mango ice cream after every meal, low crowds on weekdays, and a super kind staff. We cannot recommend this location enough to individuals searching for some great Indian food in the Provo area!
Himalayan Flavor - Logan, Utah
This is high quality food, and what's even better is that during lunch they serve buffet style for $14 per person. Everything they serve here is worth a try, and don't miss out on their veggie pakora. This was the first place in Utah I had a good Indian Saag. If you live in the Logan area, definitely check this place out! The artwork throughout the building is admirable as well!
Tandoori Oven - Logan, Utah
This restaurant is definitely on par with Tandoor Indian Grill in Provo, although it is the Butter Chicken that is the star here! Wow, top three best Butter Chicken in Utah. Don't miss this small location, as it's attached to a gas station. And don't let the crowds turn you off either -- it's popular for a reason!
Bombay House - Provo, Utah
I have extremely mixed thoughts on Bombay house. The food is amazing and not over-hyped. However, I do feel that the prices are inflated a little beyond what they should be. There are two other top-notch Indian restaurants in Provo (mentioned previously) that I would probably visit first. Don't misunderstand me, the food at this spot is amazing, but if you can only go to one Indian restaurant in Provo -- Bombay House wouldn't be my first choice.
Fine Indian Dining - Lehi, Utah
This restaurant located in Lehi Utah was definitely worth the visit! We remember this spot as being very small with top notch costumer service. The artwork is stunning and the general atmosphere is really cozy. Their naan was a heavy competitor for the best in Utah Valley, and their main dishes didn't disappoint either. This place is a little more expensive, but worth a try.
